Carved wood, believed to be oak foot warmer stool. Made in England and dated ANNO 1872.
Measurements: Just under 8 inches high. 9 inches accross. Box form with opening hinged front and small brass handle. It would have been used to hold a bowl of burning coal, thus warming the feet of the person resting their legs on it. All sides, including the top are carved with fabulous scenes of English Royalty and symbolism. The top: has geometric patterned carved frame containing an fully openwork carved ANNO 1872 with a monogram inbetween the words. The front has a similar frame with fans and cross hatching and within a tent-like enclosure is a lion rampant (standing on his hind legs), tail curled behind him, a crown on his head and a sword in his front paw (hand?). The next panel, clockwise, contains a large double-walled, patterned, circle with thistles carved in each corner around it. Within the circle is a two headed eagle, each crowned and with another even larger crown above their heads. Wings outspread and torso containing a carved castle turret and archway. The back panel has a similar carved double circle to the previous one, but with a complex sunburst contained in it. Finally, the last panel, also with the double circle has a dove sitting on a branch, surrounded by foliage. Good condtion.
