ca 1850 a matched pair of custom .44 cal. over-and-under percussion pistols by prolific London maker William Needler. Marked Needler/Hull behind hammer, the pistols feature 3` rotating barrels and finely checkered walnut grips. Barrels exhibit proof marks on flat. The hammer, frame, trigger guard and edge of barrels are deeply etched with restrained decorative bands. The metal is smooth silver-colored with traces of original bright finish. The butt opens to accommodate wadding or caps. Action is tight. One nipple is slightly damaged otherwise the pair are in fine condition. The segmented mahogany case bears Needler`s paper label and a variety of accessories including original copper flask, nipple socket and screwdriver, with an incorrect replacement bullet mold. The varnished case shows moderate surface wear but retains its lock and escutcheon plate with replacement key.
