*** Solid metal*** six point star, tie-rod-and-plate assembly. Star shaped plate is 8 ½ inches in diameter, about an inch thick at the center, which has a 5/8 inch hole in the center for the tie rod. I only have 3 tie rods as shown in photo, which are approximately 17 inches long. Winner of first three pieces can choose to include or not include the tie rods. Both are in good to excellent condition for solid metal architectural elements that are only 116 years old! These were removed from an "OLD" brick pump house. Input from historical preservation architect at the scene of building demolition. Building was built in 1892. The auction heading calls these stars "cast iron", they could be made from cast iron, wrought iron, or steel, as the complete description notes. They should clean up very nicely, but I'm leaving that up to the winner(s) to do or not. Glad to answer any questions about these items. Thanks. *** Interested in 6 point stars??? --- See info. below. These are not one of the "barn stars" that are made out of tin or wood and used for decoration. Othe r star-shaped objects(like these), having a structural purpose and made of cast iron, wrought iron, or steel, were often used (and are occasionally still installed) as tie plates serving as the washers for tie rods on brick or o the r masonry-based buildings. These can be found in cities with legacies of 18th- and 19th-century brick construction, such as the greater Boston , MA area. The tie-rod-and-plate assemblies served to brace a brick masonry wall. Six-pointed stars If the colinear edges of a regular six-pointed star are connected, so that two interlaced triangles are formed, a symbol results that is variously known as the hexagram , Star of David , or Shield of David (Magen David). This symbol is most commonly associated with Judaism ; it is also used in Christianity , but on a less frequent basis. The six-pointed Marian Star is a symbol used by Roman Catholics to portray celestial objects, particularly in relation to the Blessed Virgin Mary . German and German- barn American hex signs and stars often incorporate both five- and six-pointed stars as central the mes. The six-pointed star is used as the symbol for Folks Nation alliance of gangs from chicago. Crip gang members tend to use this symbol also.Apart from the foresaid mentions, six-pointed star formations are rare as an ideograph in Western cultures except in the case of law enforcement badges. In astrology some formations of a six-pointed star can signify fixed stars . In some rare instances it can signify the date of birth on a gravestone, synonymous with the five-point star.
