. GRIFFIN SHOE POLISH UNUSUAL CAST-IRON FOOT REST !! I came across this old Griffin cast-iron foot rest last week-end. The more I looked at it the more I wondered why in the world it was made to look like that! Most interesting item I saw all day. Took awhile to figure out why it was the way it was !! Finally came to me.. if you wanted to give your shoes a super brilliant shine you could run the polishing cloth under one iron rod, then up over your shoe, and back down under the other rod. You could then polish your shoe to perfection.. seated straight upright in a chair, and do it without bending down to shoe level.. Then there was the patent date. With a little help from Google I found it. Patent number 1,471,816, issued back in 1923. Three pages of illustrations and details. Invented by someone named A.L. Aste. Never heard of him.. Wondering what else he might of done I looked up his name. Absolutely unreal the things he accomplished!! From a Time Magazine story back in 1954 it turns out Anthony Aste was the founder of the Griffin Shoe Polish Company, and made it into the worlds largest maker of shoe polish!!
