CAST IRON BRONZE BOOKENDS RARE NEAR MINT DACHSHUND DOG

Auction Description It is my pleasure, to offer this very heavy and large set of bookends depicting a well known dog breed. The DACHSHUND or so-called Weiner Dog has been a favorite house dog in homes and back yards for many years. This foot long and low replica is outstanding in features as well as its extreme size and weight and has the capability of holding up a complete volume of books. This particular set is one of the most rare and unusual sets I have ever owned, being they have been cast from two different metals but are absolutely a exact set. Many manufacturers made the bases and characters of two metals, but not the front and rear of this type of set. The front half has been cast in very thick and heavy bronze with the typical old time plaster concrete interior like the early bronze clad bookends, but using a reverse process of casting the outer shell and then filling the hollow cavity with old concrete plaster mix. The back half or tail end, being the most fragile area from the middle to the tale has been cast in iron. The same casting process was as the front, but only done in iron to more than likely provide extra strength to the dogs fragile tail, since it protrudes away from the body as an original Dachshund would be in real life and would be susceptible to breaking off at the buttocks. After extensive research, I have not been able to find any source for the original maker of this set. I would imagine it was done in the mid to late 20's because of the mold process. Since, it has a very aged bronze patina resembling the 20âe(tm)s which takes years to achieve and has been produced using the raw slush metal mold process it is safe to say its age has to be in the late 20's to 30's. The extreme weight of this set has been achieved by allowing the molten metal to cool within the mold for a longer period of time which allows the exterior wall of the item to become much thicker and heavier just before pouring out the excess liquid metal from the mold. For more details, one can read Gerald McBrides book on Cast Metal Bookends which describes the many types of molding processes. The main castings show little to no wear and the deep bronze gilt has aged wonderfully. It would be safe to say these are in excellent condition, especially taking their age into account. It will more than likely be safe to say you will not find this set anytime soon. Since I have been using this set personally holding a 10 volume set of Edgar A Poe books, I have taken the liberty of replacing the worn out felts that protected the books. The original felts are on the bottoms. I guarantee these to be old and original and cast processed as described or your money will be refunded. These are an incredible find for the dog lover who wants to add to their collection of unusual and near mint condition bookends. Nose to tail: 12 inches, Side to Side 4 inches, Height 6 inches, Weight 12+ lbs. Please look at the actual photos below to see what is being offered. I take clear and precise pictures and do not computer enhance them with special effects, texture softening, or color alterations to make my items difficult to tell what is being auctioned. The pictures show nearly the exact colors of this set. These will be ideal for the Collector Enthusiast whom is seeking the very finest and rarest of dog items, and certainly will bring to your home a wonderful collectible. These are not listed and rated by any particular collectorâe(tm)s guide that I have obtained and would have to be described as rare to the on line community.
