Early cast iron mechanical apple peeler. The large gear wheel has a wonderful openwork design in the center and the rim is stamped "Reading Hardware Works Reading PA". The attached hand crank has a turned wooden knob. The large wheel turns a smaller gear that holds the fruit with a three prong fork. The large gear also engages a turntable with a coil spring activated peeler blade. The top of this part is stamped along the rim "PATd MAY 5, 1868". Another stamp around the center reads " Manuf'd By Harbster Bros. & Co." All parts are secured to a table top with the vise clamp arm and original threaded screw. The peeler is in fine condition; no broken or missing parts. It measures about 7" x 9". I will respond to all questions, comments and concerns. I offer only select antique and vintage items and I try to describe them to the best of my knowledge. However, the title of "Expert" can only be applied to a certain few and I defer to their input. Thanks so much for looking! Please see the other items I've posted this week...Always an eclectic variety! Peace, Susan
