Wood carving has been a tradition in Oaxaca for the last decades, what started like a way to get some additional money is now a way of living for many families. Animals, naguales, crosses, skeletons, and religious figures are wood carved by these amazing artists. They take a branch of Copal ( Mexican tree used as incense by prehispanic cultures) wood is still green as it is easier to carve. Artisan works with machetes and knives with such skilled hands that copal wood soon starts to take the shape of a fantastic animal. Men is usually in charge of carving and women paint the sculptures in several cases women are talented artists recognized all over the country and mainly in USA.
Epifanio Fuentes is one of the most known carvers in Oaxaca, people used to say that he introduced anteater to Oaxaca wood carving fantasy, his sons Zeny, Ivan and Efrain have learned carving art from his father. They have a singular style and special figures like anteaters, armadillos, angels, foxes, cats and jaguars. Epifanio and Zeny have been in USA in different schools teaching how to carve and in expositions showing their fantastic work.
