A very early (dated 1772) English Schoolgirl NeedleworkSampler by Catherine Wood. The sampler reads âeoeCatherine Wood Finishâe(tm)d this Sampler in the 12 Year of her age December the 8 th 1772 .âe In addition to a double rendition of the alphabet, a pious verse with a large âe~No Gains Without Painsâe(tm) motto, t are 2 dogs at the bottom, some trees and several crowns. The verse reads: Remember time will come when we must give Account to God how we on EarthDo live. No Gains Without Pains Learning will stand your friend when riches fail. (Catherine has a VERY unique styling for certain letters: her lower case âe~wâe(tm) in particular looks like a âe~run-onâe(tm) âeoenuâe! And her lower case âeoeLâe looks like an âe~fâe(tm)!) The sampler is stitched in a variety of wonderful colors: reds, blue-greens, golds, browns, yellows, etc., most of which have held up very well over time; probably the most color variety Iâe(tm)ve seen used in a sampler without a major illustration. The sampler is framed in a contemporary (but appropriate) wooden frame, Sight size is 8 ½âe x 12 ½âe and the frame size is 10 ½âe x 14 ¾âe. The needlework is stitched on a fine linen backing, without stains. Stitch loss is at a minimum (the âe~Sâe(tm) in âeoeGainsâe is gone, as I a small part of the âeoePâe in âeoePainsâe, being the most note-worthy), but t are a number of small holes in the linen, the largest one being 1 ¼âe x ½âe (approx.) in the center, under the word âeoePainsâe. I have tried to show the majority of the holes with yellow arrows on the last photo (and can send close-ups). Because of the way the sampler is mounted on a linen/cloth backing, these holes do not jump out at you, but I want potential buyers to be aware of them. The color remains strong for a sampler done before the American Revolution. And the little dogs and the alternating color usage ads to the charm. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
