A cabinet card portrait of Major-General Sir William Penn Symons, K.C.B. Born 17 July 1843, the son of William Symons of Hatt in Cornwall, he joined the 24th Regiment as an Ensign in 1863. He served as a Captain in the Anglo-Zulu War with the 24th Foot (medal and bar): âe~Served with 2nd Batt. until June 1879, when [he was] sent by Major-Gen. Clifford to purchase horses for Government in the old Cape Colonyâe(tm) [Mackinnonn and Shadbolt The South Africa Campaign of 1879 , Greenhill Books, 1995.] He later served in Burma 1886 (medal and bar, mentioned in despatches), Chin-Lushai 1889 (bar, C.B.), Waziristan 1894 (bar), Tochi and Tirah 1897 (medal and two bards, K.C.B.). On 20 October 1899, he was mortally wounded in the battle at Talana in Natal during the Boer War, dying of his wounds three days later. T is a monument to his memory in St Paulâe(tm)s Church at Ambala in India, erected by the officers who had served under him. The print is in excellent condition - the patches of yellowing outside the area of the image appear worse in the scan than in reality. The mount shows some yellowing recto in its margins and, to a greater extent, verso at its edges. Dimensions: A standard cabinet card measures approx. 6.5" by 4.2" (165 mm by 107 mm).
