This is a Civil War era Carte de Visite, CDV, or calling card with the photo of a known Civil War Naval Officer, identified in pencil on the reverse as being killed aboard the ship U.S.S. Monongahela which was Admiral Farragut's flagship in 1860. The photographic studio was E. Jacobs, New Orleans, LA. Size is 2.5 x almost 4 inches. Condition is fair with clipped corners on the top and the image has become lighter due to age. T are several raised dots visible from the front at the top of the image. At the bottom t seems to be a dot of foxing, a pinhole and a slight lifting from the backing. Other than the clipped corners, on the back of the card t is little or no damage and it looks almost new. The wording on the back says "Lieut.(crossed out) Cmdr. Abner Reid Killed on Board U.S.S. Monongahela. Information in Wikipedia the free encyclopedia says that Reid was wounded at Donaldsonville, La and was told by a doctor that he had hours to live. "Well", said Reid, "Doctor, I don't know as t is any use of holding on any longer. I guess I'll shove off." He then immediately expired. The Monongahela was a 1,378 ton sloop that fought at Port Hudson and Vicksburg and the Battle of Mobile Bay. It rammed the Tennessee in 1865.
