A carte-de-visite portrait of Carl August Peter Cornelius (1824-1874), the German composer, writer about music, poet and translator.
Photographed by Franz Hanfstaengl of Munich, identified recto in the lower margin. Both the print and the mount are in excellent condition. An inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter as Peter Cornelius while another along the upper edge gives the location, Munich, and the date, 20 May 1876. Since Cornelius died in 1874, this presumably is the date that the carte was purchased. That said, this looks very much like the composer's uncle, the German painter Peter von Cornelius (1784-1867) and could possibly be him. Be sure to check out all my other auctions on eBay this week!
