A carte-de-visite portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), the Italian soldier who played an important role in the unification of Italy by conquering Sicily and Naples in 1860.
Born in Nice, he became a sailor before joining the Risorgimento nationalist movement. Condemned to death for treason, he escaped to South America, w he became a mercenary. He returned to Italy during the 1848 revolution, served with the Sardinian army against the Austrians, and commanded the army of the Roman republic in the defence of the city against the French. He subsequently lived in exile until 1854, when he settled on the island of Caprera. In 1860, at the head of his 1,000 redshirts, he won Sicily and Naples for the new kingdom of Italy. He served in the Austrian War of 1866, and fought for the French in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Photographed by Negretti and Zambra, identified by their backplate on the reverse of the mount. The print perhaps has slightly limited tonal range, but is otherwise in excellent condition. Apart from a small black mark on its top edge, the mount is very clean.
