This is a CDV photo of Hon. C.L. Vallandigham (1820-1871), a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio who was the leader of the Copperhead faction of anti-war Democrats during the Civil War. He advocated dividing the nation into four territories, interrogated John Brown, was in favor of states' rights and tangled repeatedly with Abraham Lincoln. His 1863 arrest on charges of sedition sparked a long-running controversy. The photo is marked "from the last negative," so dates to just after his death. It has a studio mark on the back from a Dayton, Ohio photo studio, with "111 3rd St." written in fountain pen. Very nice, clean condition! I could not find another image like this anywhere on the internet. US postage is $1.50.
