Â*CDV ~ SAM HOUSTON ~ FIRST PRESIDENT OF REPUBLIC OF TEXAS. Rare Carte-de-Visite Photograph, published by E. Anthony from BradyÂ's negative, N.Y. From a series of cartes-de-visite of prominent personalities based on BradyÂ's earlier daguerreotypes. Bottom of mount trimmed. A strong bust-length pose, in oval format, BradyÂ's name and HoustonÂ's in negative. American military hero and political leader Sam Houston [1793-1863] became the first President of the Republic of Texas in 1836, serving until 1838. He was again President from 1841 to 1844. On the admission of Texas to the Union, Houston became U.S. Senator [1846-59], remaining a strong believer in the maintenance of the Union. He went on to become Governor of Texas in 1859, being deposed in 1861 for refusal to take the oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. Originally Governor of Tennessee [1827-29], he moved to the Indian country of Cherokee Nation, now Oklahoma in 1829, and on into Texas in 1833. As trouble developed with Mexico, Houston was chosen commander in chief of the forces of the Texan provisional government, and as such met and defeated the Mexican troops under Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto [April. 21, 1836]. ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ TERMS: NO PAYPAL Authenticity Guaranteed.
