'A carte-de-visite is small albumen print that is mounted on a standard sized 2 1/2" by 4" backing card. The process was patented in 1854 by a Parisian photographer and the style gained their height of popularity in the United States during the Civil War. The were called carte-de-visite, which is French for "visiting card," because their compact size made them perfect for photographic calling cards that could be presented during a social visit.' We recently acquired a set of very rare mid-late 1800's artifacts from a home near Dedham, Massachusetts. Included in this collection was a set of circus side show CDV's and cabinet cards. Up for auction at NO RESERVE: A Civial War Era 1860's CDV of Millie Christina the two headed girl, taken by J.H. Fitzgibbon, Photographer, 116 North Fourth Street, St Louis, MO. Millie Christina was born in Columbus Co., North Carolina on July 11th, 1851, and was declared as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World'. is a write up on them from Wikipedia: Millie and Christine were born on July 11, 1851 to parents who were slaves, on the plantation of Mr. Alexander McCoy. The plantation was near the town of Whiteville, North Carolina , which resulted in the girls also being referred to as The Carolina Twins. Prior to the sisters' birth, their mother had seven other children, five boys and two girls, all of ordinary size and form. They were sold to a showman named Joseph Pearson Smith at birth, but were soon kidnapped by a rival showman. The kidnapper fled to the United Kingdom but was thwarted when the United Kingdom banned slavery. Smith traveled to Britain to collect the girls and brought with him their mother, Monimia, from whom they had been separated. He and his wife provided the twins with an education and taught them to speak five languages, dance, play music, and sing. [1] For the rest of the century, the twins enjoyed a successful career as "The Two-Headed Nightingale", and appeared with the Barnum circus . In 1869 , an autobiography on the twins, titled History and Medical Description of the Two-Headed Girl, was sold during their public appearances. On October 8 , 1912 , Millie and Christine died of tuberculosis .This is an extremely early CDV of them in their youth and is highly sought after, highly collectible and very very rare!
