The gourd-like shape of this perfectly proportioned vase and its plain Celadon Green glaze were a reference back to the porcelain of earlier periods when thought, harmony of color, and shape were the ideal of the more refined Chinese taste. The name Celadon derives from two Sanskrit words: 'Sila' , which means stone, and 'Dhara' , which means green. Therefore, celadon means green stone . The glaze is almost matt, and its consistency indicates a high degree of skill in the makers as does the symmetry of the two globes, which are the principal features of the piece. In a nicely artistic restraint the color does not extend to the rim, nor does it extend to the base, which has a viscous clear glaze, below which is the reign-mark of the Emperor Qianlong (1736 to 1795 AD) in under-glaze blue seal script.
