Attractive sepia celluoid button (pinback) promoting William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, in 1900. McKinley was the Republican presidental candidate and Roosevelt the vice presidential. This portrait is the most famous of the two. Roosevelt returned from Cuba, hero of his rough Riders Calvary Unit, Rebublican bosses in NY tapped him to run for Govenor, despite their doubts of loyalty. Elected in 1898, he became an energetic reformer. His actions dismayed the Ny bosses so much they conspired to get rid of him by drafting him for the Republican vice-presidental nomination in 1900. They assumed that his would be a largely ceremonial role. They assumed wrong when the news came about the death of President McKinley. Instead of being in the Governers Mansion in NY, he was in the Executive Mansion in Washington, DC. He was the one to call it The White House.
