- Antique Japanese accounts box, called chobako , and also suzuribako due to the fact that the upper portion was used to keep the "suzuri", or inkstone, and writing brushes. However its use was also used for keeping a shop's accounts, receipts, seals, and money.- The exterior wood is keyaki, and the inner portions of the drawers are kiri, or Japanese cypress. Very good overall condition; no bug or termite damage. The inner portions of the drawers do show use, such as ink stains, which is common to such boxes. Early half of Meiji period.- Note that t is no key for the bottom right sie drawer, and at some point in its history, most likely post-war, it was slightly vanished which originally it wasn't (early pieces were stained, and then waxed to give them luster and a protective coating. - DIMENSIONS: Width: 23cm (9"); Height: 23cm (9"); Depth: 31cm (12½"). FRANCAIS:- Boite appellee "chobako" qui avait pour utilite de garder les ustentsils pour ecrire, ainsi que les factures, sceaux, argent, et autres choses dont pouvait se servir un artisan ou un petit magasin. - Exterieur en bois d'orme (keyaki), et l'interieur des tiroirs en cypres japonais (kiri).
