This is a wonderful and hard to find cast iron elephant dispenser in excellent condition with it's well aged patina. Unlike other ones on eBay this one has never been painted, cleaned or abused. We know the family who first owned this item and we are the second family. The height is 5 3/4 inches at the trunk and 9 inches long from trunk to tail. This was manufactured before filter cigarettes became the rage. The Howdah (cigarette compartment) will probably hold a 20 count pack of Lucky Strikes or Camels non filter cigarettes. A turn of the tail drops the cigarette into catcher brackets under the belly of the elephant. We have included in this offer it's original ashtray that hangs on the base of the item. We saw an item similar to this one years ago. On the inside of the Howdah lid t was a sticker that read: "Chang" made by Mid-West Novelty Company 1823 South Michigan Ave. Chicago, Il. On the underside lip of the lid it reads: PAT PEND. This piece is in excellent condition. However, on the left side of the trunk(see close-up picture) are small air bubble(?) holes. They had to have occurred during its manufacture. This does not deter from its elegance and almost century old beauty. This one survived the times. It weighs 4 pounds 1 ounce. .
