FIRST TO COVER A COUPLE GENERAL ITEMS. We are starting to get into the best of the best in my "award winning" collection of Charatan's. The pipes you will see over the next weeks are truly from my most personal part of my collection. For the most part, ones I do not even carry to a Pipe show for example. Why am I selling them? I have started making pipes again and am selling them under the label of Perry White, my grandfathers name, who first interested me in pipes and tobacco. I am pleased to tell you I won the award for "Best Pipe in Show 2007" for my Perry White Volcano Pipe at the 23rd annual Richmond Virginia Pipe Show and Sale. So, anyway my Mentor in Pipe Making told me I have to start smoking my own... and I thought about it and decided... well, you know he is right, so we are.
Some of you may have noticed I have always had a no reserve on all my pipe auctions. That will remain one of my policies. You may notice a change in my usual starting price which has always been $7.00. For the Charatan's selling now in the weeks ahead, the starting auction price will be $201. T are two reasons for this. First, each of the pipes to be offered is valued at much more than the $201 starting bid and t is not one which I would sell for less than that amount. That is the story straight up, if you decide we cannot do that, then I will just keep them and smoke em' when I can. Number two, Ebay has decided items over $200 become private bidding and although I do not personally like that policy, I have talked to many of you that do, so t you are... what I can provide for you is the kind of pipe and service you can read about in my Feedback, and knowing you will get that service also.
I am very pleased to acknowledge I received the Award for the "Best Briar Collection" for the Chicagoland International Pipe and Tobacciana Show for the year, 2006. This pipe is from that AWARD winning collection. I am also one of the two founders of the ICCS in Chicago 2006, the International Charatan's Collectors Society. Well if you are a collector of fine smoking pipes you know Charatan is no longer making Pipes. They billed themselves as "England's Oldest Pipemaker", and "Perfection in Pipes". I happen to be the owner of several of the older Charatan Pipes, one's from the 60's and 70's mostly. Some before they changed the stamping to City of London and some after. I have been a pipe collector and smoker for over 40 years. I have owned many "High Grade" pipes over those years, the ones in my collection I smoke most often are Charatan's. Charatan as is said, was one of the best at making pipes with wonderful shapes carved to the grain and they always had the best grain. If you wanted a pipe with beautiful grain, you bought a Charatan. And then, all this is no more because Charatan as we knew it, is gone. This pipe is very large as are most of the pipes still in my collection which I will be selling. It would be called a half bent pipe with a Dublin bowl, modified with two panels near the bottom of the bowl on each side and the unique Charatan's "rough top".The pipe is in near perfect condtion. All nomenclature is crisp and clear. It is stamped City of London and Extra Large and does not have a Lane Mark. It is of course from the Lane Era and dated early to mid 70's. The bit is the original Tapered bit, in perfect condition, no marks and CP logo intact. Check out the grain and the way the pipe is carved to flow with that spectacular display. A nice gentle half bent to the extra long shank. The Dublin Bowl, is the"Flagship Shape" and Hermann Lane's personal favorite shape. The pipe truly is "near mint". Draft hole is dead center bottom on the bowl and a pipe cleaner passes with ease. The pipe is approximately 7 1/4 inches in length, the bowl is about 2 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches wide at the rim. Truly a collectorspiece.
