I am very pleased to acknowledge I received the Award for the "Best Briar Collection" for the Chicagoland International Pipe and Tobacciana Show for the year, 2006. This pipe is from that AWARD winning collection. T are others I am selling from that collection... more great pipes over the next several weeks. I am also one of the two founders of the ICCS in Chicago 2006, the International Charatan's Collectors Society. Well if you are a collector of fine smoking pipes you know Charatan is no longer making Pipes. They billed themselves as "England's Oldest Pipemaker", and "Perfection in Pipes". I happen to be the owner of several of the older Charatan Pipes, one's from the 60's and 70's mostly. Some before they changed the stamping to City of London and some after. I have been a pipe collector and smoker for over 40 years. I have owned many "High Grade" pipes over those years, the ones in my collection I smoke most often are Charatan's. Charatan as is said, was one of the best at making pipes with wonderful shapes carved to the grain and they always had the best grain. If you wanted a pipe with beautiful grain, you bought a Charatan. Of course that is an opinion. And then, all this is no more because Charatan as we knew it, is gone. Stamped EXTRA LARGE the shape is Classic Charatan's, a tall graceful Dublin bowl, ever so slightly canted forward, unusual, unique, and yet just a bit off traditional. The bowl is thick walled and the rim is slightly raised of the bowl and rounded. Charatan's EXECUTIVE Dublin Bowl, the "Flagship Shape" Hermann Lane's personal favorite shape. The grain is tight and excellent all around the bowl, and the bowl rim is extra wide with plenty of beautiful birdseye. All this complimented by a long square and/or rectangular shank, AND the pipe is a SITTER. The pipe is stamped City of London in script, t is no Lane mark but it is definitely of the Lane Era mid to late 70's. All nomenclature is crisp and clear. Original double comfort bit with Reg. Mark intact crisp and clear, CP Logo is a 50's factory restamp. T are almost imperceptible bite marks on the top of the bit. This is a really great pipe in excellent condition. The pipe is about 6 3/4 inches in length, the bowl is about 2 1/2 inches tall and 1 3/4 inches in width at the rim, pipe cleaner passes with ease, draft hole is dead center bottom. Truly a collectors piece. A unique part of pipe history for your collection. I have never smoked this one since it has been in my collection, but if I told you who I got it from, most all would know who he is, a very well cared for pipe! The pipe has been gently reamed, cleaned and sanitized and comes to you ready to light up and enjoy. Anyway, all that is left to say is in the photos. Enjoy! Good luck in your bidding!
