A rare and interesting lovely antique silver goblet 5 3/8" (138mm) tall 2 1/2" (65mm) diameter with a hexagonal or hexafoil base Circa 1681. Weighing Just under 3oz(t) (89gms)There are elements of the design that are found on English silver of the period but my hunch is that this is of Dutch origin. The hexagonal or hexafoil shape is seen in the reign of James I but was seen more commonly in Holland, Germany, Hungary during the 1650-1700 period. It is also seen a lot in Jewish 17th century silver and it is possible this might be some sort of Kiddush cup; the latter usually have some sort of Hebrew inscription. There is no hallmark, if there was one it has long since been polished off. If you look at the close up of the bowl you will see the remains of the prick dot initials 'MS' and the date of 1681. The condition is very good with only one minor blemish, there is a tiny wear pin hole on one of the corners of the embossed gadrooning at the base of the circular column. It cannot be seen unless viewing the goblet from underneath and into the light.
