Charles Lisk, a popular contemporary potter in the Catawba Valley of North Carolina, met Burlon Craig upon moving to Vale, NC and, with Craig's assistance, adopted the traditional methods of earlier generations of Catawba Valley potters. Whether it be at his kiln openings or at shows such as the Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival, Lisk's wares are quickly snapped up by admiring collectors - he's particularly well known for his work with swirlware, and his face jugs are always quite popular. One of his swirl vases is photographed in "North Carolina Pottery: the Collection of the Mint Museums" edited by Barbara Perry (page 127), and numerous swirl vases and face jugs appear in "Two Centuries of Potters: A Catawba Valley Tradition" published by the Lincoln County Historical Association (pages 102-104). A photo of Lisk himself appears on page 272 of "North Carolina Art Pottery" by Everette James. 's a special treat (and a rare find) for the collector of Charles Lisk's pottery. This swirlware devil face crock combines Lisk's masterful two-tone swirl with a sheepish-looking devil face and an inscribed couplet rhyme on the reverse. The devil's sideways gaze, attractive blue eyes, and limp horns are perhaps an attempt to reassure the innocent bystander that he means no harm, but Lisk reveals his true intentions with the warning on the reverse reading: "Away from this devil, wide and far - He might get your soul inside this jar!!" Aside from the wonderful features of the devil himself, this crock is further enhanced with a pair of lug handles, a nicely-turned top rim, three parallel horizontal incised lines circling the shoulder, and of course Lisk's incredible swirl execution. The crock stands just over 11 inches tall and has a maximum diameter of about 9 1/4 inches. It is signed on the front below the mouth with the two-line stamp reading "CHARLES LISK VALE, N.C.", which is patterned after the famous Burlon Craig two-line stamp. This devil face crock is in truly superb original kiln-fresh condition with no cracks, chips, or hairline fractures. T is a very small kiln pull in the unglazed base that is in-the-making of the piece and completely confined to the base (visible at about 5 o'clock in the photo of the base). A great piece of Southern folk art, and certainly a piece with investment potential as while this might not be one-of-a-kind, I can't recall ever coming across another rhyme-bearing swirlware devil face crock in my collecting activities. Offered with no reserve and an extremely low opening bid for a wide-open auction. I accept personal checks, money orders, and PayPal. T will be a $12 shipping charge for this item for delivery by fully insured UPS Ground, and it will be shipped carefully bubble-wrapped and double-boxed to ensure safe delivery. I will contact the winning bidder by e-mail shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Good luck!
