History: Entrepreneur and film exhibitor, H.L. Gumbiner constructed the Los Angeles Theatre in the midst of the Depression at an estimated cost of more than $1 million. Intent on exceeding existing standards of extravagance, he hired architect S. Charles Lee, who became the City's most prolific theater architect. Lee believed that "the show starts on the sidewalk" and he designed every element of the building to lure the patron inside. Completed in less than six months, the Theater opened with the premiere of City Lights, the landmark film of Charlie Chaplin, who helped cover the cost of finishing the building when Gumbiner ran short of funds. Charlie Chaplin held the premier of the movie City Lights and The Los Angeles Theater in 1931 The theater was in trouble financially and Chaplin helped the owner Gumbiner restore the theater for the premier of this film. City Lights was controversial in itself as it was still a silent film after the introduction of "talkies" to the film industry . For this premier Charlie Chaplin Also invited Albert Einstein who also attended the event . The photo up for auction was signed by Chaplin to the theater owners Daughter Villas Gumbiner in Chaplins hand. I had first thought that both Chaplin and Einstein had signed but when I forwarded the signature to Sotheby's they informed me it was only Chaplin that signed. This piece is beautiful framed using the best conservation techniques acid free backing and matting museum glass and a frame well suited for the era. Bid with confidence as I value my feedback.
