Charles (Charlie) Boyd Craven (born 1909 - died 1991) was the grandson of J. D. Craven and the son of Daniel Z. Craven. In an interview from 1983 with Michelle Francis, he remarked that he was only 9 or 10 years old when he first started turning pottery in his father's shop, standing on a wooden bucket to reach the wheel. W. D Morton, in his book on the North State Pottery, noted that the young Charles Craven's talent was such that Jacques Busbee actually offered to make him the first potter at Jugtown Pottery, but Daniel Craven nixed the idea on the grounds that Charlie was too young and still needed at home. He took his first job as a potter outside the family at the age of 17 with the North State Pottery of Sanford, then ran his own pottery briefly with his brother Ferrell in Steeds, NC before ultimately accepting a job with Smithfield Art Pottery and later with Royal Crown Pottery right before WWII (w he was known to have turned many of their larger pieces). Following the war, Charles Craven moved to Raleigh, NC and started a produce business, not turning pottery again for almost 30 years. In retirement, he began to turn again, firing some of his pieces at Teagues Pottery, some at Owens Pottery, some in association with Juftown Pottery, and others, like the pieces offered , at Tobacco Road Pottery of Raleigh.
Up for auction today is a very pretty cream pitcher and lidded sugar in a bright blue glaze over which a frothy white glaze has been allowed to drape down. They are each signed on the bottom with the impressed stamp "C. B. CRAVEN", and the base of the sugar bowl has the additional "TOBACCO ROAD" stamp. The cream pitcher stands about 3 3/4 inches tall while the sugar stands about 3 inches tall to the top of the lid's finial. The set is in original mint condition with no cracks, chips, or hairline fractures. Charlie Craven is one of the true legends of 20th century North Carolina pottery. I accept personal checks, money orders, and PayPal. T will be a $10 shipping charge for delivery by fully UPS Ground or USPS, and the sugar and creamer will be carefully bubble-wrapped and double-boxed to ensure safe delivery. I will contact the winning bidder by e-mail shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Good luck!
