This set of oriental man and woman is absolutely charming. They are in rough shape, having had a long "life" and being made of delicate materials. I can see into the underskirt of one of them and it is newspaper advertising a 1955 Rambler. The basic forms of the figures are made of paper mache, with the faces and hand(s) in smooth procelain. I'm certain they are dressed in authentic and/or ceremoniaI costumes, probably made with silk brocade. The detailing is remarkable even with some elements missing or damaged. The woman figure has a broken nose and fingers, and the back of her headdress is slightly ripped. (Someone had taped it on and I dared not try to remove the tape for fear it would cause more damage.) The facial features on the man are clean and exquisitely painted but he has a missing hand and all the detail is missing from his "belt". They are about 9 1/2" tall including their lacquered bases. The bottom of the bases say "Made by Maisen, Hong Kong". Even in this worn, and perhaps well loved by a child, condition, they are proud, graceful and elegant.
