Charming Art Deco Style Majolica Basket
Collectibles:China, Porcelain:Majolica (click picture for more detail) Charming and large majolica basket - the style is art noveau transitioning to art deco. The brightly colored yellow body and purple, peaked, pierced handle are decorated with sweet pink roses and green leaves; the creamy white accent trim and interior keep the basket from being overly frou-frou. From a local estate, w the lady (the very elderly lady) of the house had been given to tracking provenance by adding the name of the person from whom she received to the base of the item in some sort of marker. The Mrs. Taylor whose name you see was her mother-in-law. The basket appears to be marked under Mrs. Taylor's name, but we cannot read the mark and were reluctant to remove the name. Based on the style and quality of the basket, we think it is a piece of 1920s Eichwald majolica. Knowing what we do about the estate and the families, it could be older. It is a large basket, measuring about 12 1/2" across and about 10 1/2" tall. Excellent color and highly reflective as you can see from the pictures w the doily under the basket is mirrored in the body. T are no chips, but t is some slight crazing and the darkening in the interior that you can see developing w the body meets the base.
