Baker has enjoyed one of the swiftest rises the art market has seen in recent years, and has employed unconventional methods in the process – including shooting his work with a gun.The first thing that greets you as you enter his studio is an air rifle, hanging on the wall. It is just a tool, he explains; like a paintbrush, it is simply another way of making marks.He goes on to say that he once wanted to see if he could 'draw by shooting’, and a number of his paintings incorporate holes, some made by him with the airgun, others made by an acquaintance with a shotgun. These days he prefers to make his holes with a drill, so the air rifle has become an ornament.It is also a fitting symbol. In the art world Baker is something of a guerrilla, who has fought his way to the top independently. He has never been represented by a gallery or dealer, relying instead on word of mouth, the internet and an ever-growing army of fans, whom he calls 'believers’.Less than five years ago he was working as a graphic illustrator, living with his wife, Tanya, and four children (there are now five) in a council flat in Greenwich. Now his works sell for tens of thousands of pounds each.He has been championed by Damien Hirst ('It’s hard to say what makes a painting great,’ Hirst has said. 'Who gives a damn? Charming Baker’s paintings are great’) and has sold to the world’s biggest collectors, including Frank Cohen and Alberto Mugrabi.The designer Paul Smith has not only bought a number of paintings, but has also installed Baker as the global ambassador of the Paul Smith London line, in part, Smith says, because of Baker’s 'charismatic nature and good looks’. A new exhibition of his paintings and sculptures opens in Covent Garden next month.Baker’s studio is surprisingly bare, with strange phrases such as 'Slap of the gods' pencilled on the walls. The room is devoid of comforts so Baker, 47, escorts me shyly but enthusiastically from one painting to the next, before apologetically fluffing up a dust sheet for me to sit on. Despite the recent attention, he still does not quite feel like he belongs. 'I feel an outsider from the art world in many ways,’ he says. 'I have an idea about how it works – galleries, clients and exclusivity, which, I think just by being a working-class lad, I’m suspicious of.’The son of an Army officer and a nurse, Alan Baker, as he was then, lived on various Army bases before the family settled in Yorkshire when he was 12. He left school at 15 – he says his temperament at the time didn’t suit the education system – and worked on a farm in Ripon as a road digger, painting in his spare time. ('Charming’ is not some zany alter ego but an affectionate nickname inherited from his labouring days.) At 20, he took night classes so that he could pass the O-levels necessary to start an art foundation course in Harrogate.A year later he moved to London to enrol at Central Saint Martins and study graphic design.
