ThisYatagnan shape sword bayonet is for the French 1866 Chassepot rifle and bears what appears to be German unit markings on the cross guard indicating that it is one of the many known to have been captured by the Germans. The French armory and date of manufacture on the spine has been removed with some parts very faintly visible. The 22-1/2” blade is mostly gray patina with some scattered patches of old pitting on the left side and one near the tip on the right. The blade edge has a few very tiny nicks while the catch works perfectly. The scabbard is not numbered and is mixed gray and brown patina with no dents. Though it is the correct scabbard, of the correct length, the bayonet seems not to want to go into it for the last 3/8” (we didn’t want to force it all the way). It may be that there’s a wad of something in the bottom. The shipping fee shown above includes a handling fee which covers shipping insurance.
