This is a gorgeous clock. It has the 4 ½ inch dial and works perfectly. It is solid brass with a nice wood base and back. The movement is the balance wheel type that is similar to a nice watch. It has some minor signs of wear but looks great. The strike can be turned off and on by the little lever on the dial.It strikes in the ship's bell manner. It takes some getting used to, but once you figure it out, it is easy. All US Navy and most other ships use the same type of striking for sounding the time every half hour aboard ship. It is based on the method used for centuries probably of sailors "standing watch" for four hours at a time. A watch starts at noon and ends at 4:00 PM, the next one starts at 4:00 PM and ends at 8:00 PM, etc. That watch that starts at noon sounds "8 bells" at that time. At 12:30 it starts over with "1 bell," 1:00 is 2 bells, 1:30 is 3 bells, then 4 bells all the way until 4:00 PM when it is 8 bells and is starts over again. It comes with the proper winding key and has to be wound once a week.It is quite heavy and will cost $18.00 for domestic US shipping. International buyer pays actual cost, which could be quite expensive, $40-50 (or more) USD depending on destination.
