White Christmas SeriesThe series ran from 1905 through 1936. The publisher of the series was chess composer and enthusiast Alain Campbell White (1880-1951). A. C. White sent most books of the series to his friends as Christmas gifts. But they were offered for sale, too. The series consists of 44 books on problems. Most books are hard covers, bound in red cloth with gold lettering, usually written in English, sometimes in German and French and one was partially in Czech.Some of the titles are: Tasks and Echoes, 100 Chess Problems by William Meredith, The White Knights, Asymmetry, Sam Loyd and His Chess Problems and Valves and Bivalves. Two that are almost never seen for sale on the used book market are Retrograde Analysis and the Robert Braune book, described below. A facsimile edition of the latter is available.This book is from the collection of Reverand Gilbert Dobbs of Carrollton, Georgia. He was considered to be one of the top ten problemist in the world.According to Wikipedia: Gilbert S. Dobbs ( Richmond, Kentucky , 6 December 1867 - Carrollton, Georgia , on February 14 1941 ) was a composer of chess US .Son of the pastor Baptist Charles Edwin Willoughby Dobbs, studied at Franklin College in Franklin (Indiana) and at Bethel College in Russellville , where he obtained an MA in 1888. Wanting to become also a Baptist minister, he studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville , where he was ordained a priest in 1890. He carried out his ministry in various US cities: Bloomington , Brownsville , Memphis , New Orleans and finally Carrolton in Georgia .He compose problems in two and three moves, generally with positions aesthetically attractive and hard keys.He gave his name to a topic of two moves: "Two black defenses uproot it in turn two white pieces nailed two more defenses and capture them with a check, giving rise to two variants of using controscacco crazy." The problem pioneer of this issue got honorable mention in the third contest of the Good Companion of December 1918. Alain C. White and Richard E. Cheney dedicated the book A Chess Silhouette: One Hundred Chess Problems By the Reverend Gilbert Dobbs (Overbrook Press, Stamford, 1942).Alain Campbell White (* 3. March 1880 in Cannes; † 23. April 1951 in Summerville (South Carolina) [1]) was an American chess composer and botanists.For his Pflanzenerstbeschreibungen the abbreviation is "ACWhite" used. [2]Whites parents came from America and traveled with him back to where he in the age of five chess learned. At the age of eleven years and sparked he composed chess problems so that his first task was published in December 1891st White hit the chess composer Sam Loyd, which he was an ardent supporter of chess problem. In 1914 he founded the Good Companions Club, which almost all known chess composers belonged. There were monthly tournaments held and there was a monthly club magazine printed.
