cover made of antelope hide and painted using colors of blue, yellow, and green pigment; a buffalo is rendered above two spheres with thin lines radiating from center; bordered with darker green lines and circular "splatter marks" contained within an outer yellow ring; brass hawk bells decorate edge of cover, diameter 18.5". Provenance: Previously sold at Christie’s in their January 12, 2006, American Indian Art sale (lot 162).Condition: Not shown in catalogue photograph is a red wool corona (see below images) with replaced turkey feathers, and further embellished with hawk bells. Written authentication of shield and cover provided by William Plitt. Some hawkbells missing, small hole in backside of hide, shoestring threads through cover to hold to shield.
