Victorian Child's RedAesthetic TransferwarePlate LITTLE MAE with PETS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890 This is a wonderful child's transferware plate, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the plate measures 5-3/8" in diameter. The decoration is transfer printed in a rich cherry red or dark English pink. The piece depicts a little girl, named Mae or May sitting on a doorstep with her trust pet dog, a cat on her lap and a kitten lapping up milk from a saucer beside her. T are birds all around her, and the scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, with 5 little peaches in the border trim. It is marked with registration number 106741 and pattern number 780, along with the initial of the maker, Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Pets" of "Little May". The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Minor kiln dust and minor manufacturing flaws, typical of these early wares and original to the making. Fine overall crazing consistent with age. Offered as read more
