Child's PUNCH & JUDY This fanciful child's transferware sucrier or sugar pot dates to c.1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea set, the bulbous round melon-shaped pot stands about 4 1/2" tall with a scalloped rim and fancy applied handles and finial. The color is a rich cherry red or dark English pink. The sugar features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch and Judy & baby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. These whimsical characters, surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies, repeat on each side of the pot. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as in Gifts for Good Children (Volume 2) written by Maureen Batkin and published by Richard Dennis . The pattern name is "Punch". The sugar was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-to-late 19th century, known for his whimsical children's teasets. It is marked with the pattern and part of the maker's name along with a crown mark. The little sugar is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Typical manufacturing imperfections, none of which detract and all original to the making. Displays perfectly with clear and crisp transfers. Offered as is, it is amazing that this little teapot belonged to a child more than 100 years ago! Transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, and is getting harder to find. This amusing little pot will make a wonderful addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia. We have listed other playful child's transferware dishes, and we are always happy to combine shipping for multiple purchases.
