Offered is a NON-RESERVE auction for a fine Chinese Famille Rose/polychrome enameled porcelain vase of baluster form. The shoulder is applied with two moulded lion-heads as handles. The body is decorated with two reserved roundels/medallions depicting, respectively, an outing Shoulao/nobleman with a child attendant and two ladies in a garden setting surrounded with a richly polychrome enamled background of floral scrolls. The vase is supported by a tall foot ring and its bottom is painted with an overglaze iron red six character Chien-Lung mark in seal script. The milky white glaze on the vase's bottom resembles the quality found in earlier Chien-Lung pieces. Although the vase has the Chien-Lung era characteristics and comes with a photocopy receipt which shows that it was purchased from the Toyo Art Shop of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo sometimes in the 1940s (no exact date nor price mentioned) and a merchant's statement testifying that the vase is of the Chien-Lung period, it is, i believe, from the early Republican period in the Hong Xian-landscape-with-figures style. The porcelain wall is a bit thin, but not the egg-shell type, and of fine quality. The vase stands 7 7/8" tall with 5 1/2" diameter and is in outstanding condition. It is certainly a fine porcelain vase that deserves the right new owner.
