Chinese Late Yuan/Early Ming (14 th century)Blue Bats/Longevity Plate Absolutely wonderful and unusual 14 th century plate with longevity symbol surrounded by four bats plate. This is a small deep condiment plate with blue and white glaze over a buff body. The interior is decorated in the center with the Chinese character for longevity with four bats around the symbol. The symbol and bats are bounded by a single thing line and then bounded by a wide line. The blue in this piece is a beautiful cobalt with wonderful symmetry and execution. The exterior and base are glazed white buff. The four bats symbolize the blessing of longevity from all four directions. The plate is in excellent condition for its age. It does show years of use since the glaze has worn through around most of the rim edge and the foot has worn completely smooth. Also lots of glaze grazing. The plate also spent some time buried. Under 40X magnification manganese crystals are visible in all vessel crevices. This is an authentic 14 th century plate which was loved, used and buried with an unusual and highly sought after symbol. Dimensions: Height 13/16 inches (2 cm), Rim Diameter 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm), Foot Diameter 2 9/16 inches (6.5 cm). If you have any questions or require additional information please call me at .
