Chinese Robbins Egg Blue Porcelain Mallet Vase (18 thCentury) with Gold Gilt Applied Lacquer Design This is an exquisitely designed larger mallet shaped vase with a deep dimensional iridescent robins egg blue glaze. Lacquer design over glaze is highlighted by a naturalistic swan looking to heaven while perched on a branch. On the opposite side a swallow flits through the sky filled with dots of clouds and stars. Gold gilt provides additional depth and realism to the lacquer elements. Applied lacquer is an incredibly time consuming and meticulous technique w many fine layers of lacquer have to be built up. Stylistic elements and production techniques assure this as an 18 th century piece. Due to the high quality and artistic elements I believe this is a late period Kangxi (early 18 th century) piece. Qing ceramic decorative arts do not get much better than that seen on this vase. The piece is in incredible condition for its age. The gilt has worn on much of the lacquer but this only enhances the dimensionality of the design. The piece does have a large recent hairline that crosses the base and goes partly up the side of the vase. It is well depicted in the attached photographs. The hairline has been stabilized with paleobond and should not spread. You can get the finest in Qing art at a great price with this vase. These are extremely
