An attractive set of six blue & white Chinese export porcelain bowls and saucers, Kangxi period, early 18th century. description: This auction is for an attractive set of six tea bowls and six saucers, decorated in blue under glaze on milky white, originating from China. These highly ornate objects were made for the export market to Europe and are dating to the early 18th century. They were made during the reign of the emperor KangXi (Kang Hsi) 1662-1722. Chinese porcelain was often traded by the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), which had special trading privileges to Japan (Decima Island) and China. The wealthy Dutch merchants adored the delicate Chinese porcelain and large quantities were shipped to Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is known that the Chinese factories reserved their best quality porcelain for export, thus meeting the European taste. This set consists of six slightly scalloped saucers and six matching bowls. The diameter of the saucers is 5 1/8 inches (130 mm). The cups stand 2 inches (50 mm) high and are 3,25 inches (83 mm) wide. The set is hand decorated in a wonderful deep blue color with a central pattern of flowers and foliage with flying birds. The rim of the saucer dishes has 12 lotus shaped relief fields showing stylized flower patterns. The under side rim is equally very ornately decorated with continuous flower patterns, within an ornate border. The bowls have a matching design both on the inside and on the outside, and have twelve nicely shaped raised reserves. All items are marked with a single character (Yu = Jade) mark within two concentric circles. Although small differences in the decoration are visible (as usually found on groups of early Chinese export porcelain) this can certainly be called a matching set. Both the color and the patterns of these lovely Chinese porcelain items indicate that these are really top quality pieces, made during the Kangxi period, which covers five decades in the 17th and 18th century.Condition: Three saucers are in excellent condition, without severe damages, hairline cracks or repairs, producing a clear sound when tapped by fingernails, but all of these have a light rim chip/fritttings. The three other dishes all have a very short and insignificant rim hairline, nearly invisible with the naked eye, and some insignificant rim chips/frittings. Two little bowls are in perfect condition. All other bowls have a hairline and some rim imperfections, including a distinct rim damage (small piece missing) to one of them. Most flaws are very insignificant, but need to be mentioned for accuracy. All in all this is a very fine set, which displays very well. Please view the pictures, which give a good impression of the condition and the exceptional quality of these lovely objects. I guarantee age (18th century, KangXi period) and authenticity of these beautiful collectors items. Please note that the display stands visible on the pictures are not included in this auction.
