This is a long (10.3 inches or 27cm) carved ivory cane or parasol handle, carved in Canton, China between 1860-1900. Beautifully relief carved with dragons, the piece comes apart in 3 bits. The dragon part of the handle has a slight (very stable) crack in the neck of the dragon. (see photos). Although the dragon top screws into the top of the can perfectly well we think it could do with more support, this will glue and peg better quite easily. We were tempted just to glue it but think that if somebody wants to use this it would be better to peg it properly to make it very secure. Less than an inch immediately under the dragon handle t is a bobble - this has been glued across w the screw thread perhaps has given away, but t is no damage at all or cracking. The piece then unscrews in the middle again and at the end finishes in a brass fitting. It's a wonderful piece of Chinese craftmanship and lovely to find it in such wonderful condition as normally the dragon finials are missing. It comes from an estate sale at Bonhams together with a large quantity of other carved ivory items which will be listed in the coming week - Chinese, Japanese and Burmese and Indian carved items. Please bookmark our site if you like ivory! Shipping: Insured shipping to USA and China is $16, to Europe is $12, UK special delivery is £5. Always happy to combine lots for postage. Please note in the above costs $11 is the insurance cost, so if you buy more items t is only one insurance cost.
