Chinese Cloisonné / Cloisonne Baluster Vase Circa R epublic of China (1912–49) Turquoise blue enamel on a copper body in the shape of a baluster vase manufactured during the Republic Era (1912 to 1949) of China. Due to the excellent workmanship of the cloisonné manufacturing and the use of copper (rather than bronze or brass), this baluster vase would appear to be from the time of the “False Emperor” or the early years of the Republic Era in China. These types of vases were often used as Tea Canisters and given as gifts; such as, a wedding gift. When the tea was used up then the canister remained to remind the person receiving the gift of the givers affections and kind-regards. There are also special meanings in any gift given; these types of meanings are intertwined in the teachings of the Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and folklore. There is a Buddhist teaching of the Buddha of the “Impermanent of Life”. That is, we all live and then we all die regardless of how high or low our station in life might be. The only thing which remains is our works (good or bad). So, the tea is like life; here today but gone tomorrow. The tea is “impermanent” or temporary. While the canister lives on as a reminder of the givers gift and kindness to the receiver. During the reign of the “Great Emperor of China” (sometimes referred to as the “False Emperor”) from 11 December 1915 to 5 June 1916, the General Yan Shikai attempted to revive the old manufacturing ways of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The best materials in the imperial storehouses were brought forth and used to manufacture some very high quality wares during this brief period. Only the best material was used and only the best items were made. Any product which appeared to be inferior or substandard, typically were destroyed.
