A blue and white Chinese export porcelain plate, decorated with oriental persons, Kangxi period, c. 1700. Description: On offer is this rare Chinese porcelain plate, hand decorated under glaze in blue on milky white. The plate shows a highly ornate decoration of two oriental persons in a chamber. The rim of this plate is painted with trellis work enriched with flower patterns within four reserves. The back side is decorated with landscapes, and marked with a six character mark within concentric circles. This attractive plate was made in China around the year 1700. The intense ultramarine blue color, the marking and the pattern indicate that this object was made during the Kangxi (Kang Hsi) period (1662-1722). This skillfully decorated piece with it's very ornate back side and rare type of marking certainly is a top quality product of that period. Many Chinese products were exported to the Middle East and Europe. Oriental porcelain was imported to The Netherlands by the Dutch East Indies Company (V.O.C.), which had commercial privileges to China and Japan. The wealthy Dutch merchants were traditionally very fond of the subtle Chinese porcelain and large and important collections (both private and public) have been built up and cherished in The Netherlands during the past centuries.
