An attractive set of six Chinese export Batavian Ware Imari porcelain tea bowls and six saucers, all with cappucine borders, first half 18th century description: In the early 17th century, the Dutch East Indies Company (V.O.C.) was founded and based in Batavia (now Djakarta, Indonesia). One of their more successful export products to Europe throughout the latter part of the 17th and 18th centuries was brown-glazed porcelain with blue and white or polychrome decorated patterns, subsequently know as Batavian ware. On offer is this attractive set of six Chinese porcelain tea bowls and six matching saucers, hand painted under glaze in the imari palette. A cobalt blue color is painted under the glaze on a milky white base, while the iron red and gilt decoration is applied over the glaze. These objects are elaborately decorated with a central design of flower sprays. The outside of the cups and saucers has a brown coffee colored glaze applied to it, traditionally referred to as: cappucine. The objects are unmarked T is minimal variety in the decoration of the cups, due to the fact that each was decorated by hand. However, this certainly is a matching set, as these decoration varieties are often found on groups of Chinese export ware.
