A fine pair of blue and white Chinese export porcelain plates, decorated with a rare 'Performing for the mandarin' pattern, Yong Zheng period, c. 1725 Description: On offer is this rare pair of Chinese porcelain plates, hand decorated under glaze in blue on milky white. The pointed and scalloped plates show an unusual and highly ornate decoration of two elegantly dressed maidens in high coiffure and long dress, dancing in the garden of a pavilion as a mandarin sits at his desk, watching them through his window. The borders of these plates are elaborately painted with eight pointed reserves, filled with various flower patterns in different backgrounds. The back sides are not decorated and unmarked. This pair of plates is in attractive condition, but shows light traces of age. One plate has some light rim frittings, but is in excellent condition otherwise, without hairlines or repairs. The second plate has a faint base hairline (visible on front and back), and some rim frits. Please view the pictures, which give a good impression of both superb quality and condition of the objects. This attractive plate pair was made in China around the year 1725. The intense blue color and the precisely painted pattern indicate that these objects were made during the Yong Zheng period (1723-1735). They might even date as early as the Kangxi period (1662-1722), but I prefer to be on the safe side. These skillfully decorated pieces with their very ornate pattern certainly are top quality products of the first decades of the 18th century. Dishes with the same pattern were found on board the Ca Mau shipwreck, sunk c. 1725, offered through Sotheby's Amsterdam in Januray 2007. (view lot # 480 - 489). Unlike the shipwreck cargo porcelain items (which sold for top prices), the glaze of these plates is intact and not affected by sea water. From the 17th century onwards, many Chinese products were exported to the Middle East and Europe. Oriental porcelain was imported to The Netherlands by the Dutch East Indies Company (V.O.C.), which had commercial privileges to China and Japan. The wealthy Dutch merchants were traditionally very fond of the subtle Chinese porcelain and large and important collections (both private and public) have been built up and cherished in The Netherlands during the past centuries. These rare Yongzheng plates measure 7,25 inches (185 mm) across. The objects originate from a private Dutch collection. I guarantee age (c. 1725) and authenticity (Yong Zheng or late Kangxi period) of these wonderful collector's items. Please view my other auctions for more oriental porcelain.
