An exceptional Chinese blue and white porcelain ovoid jar, Kangxi period, c. 1720 Description: Top quality Kangxi (Kang Hsi) porcelain was often exported to Europe. Especially The Netherlands had a strong commercial link with China. Oriental porcelain was imported to Holland by the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), having special trading privileges to China and Japan. The wealthy Dutch upper class adored the subtle oriental porcelain and large quantities were shipped to Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. On offer is this Chinese porcelain jar of outstanding quality, hand decorated in under glaze blue on milky white, and dating to the Kangxi period (1662-1722). The ovoid jar is fully decorated with prunus blossom, on a cracked ice ground. The upper rim has a ridged pattern. The jar is unmarked. The exceptional intense blue color of the delicately detailed decoration indicates that this is certainly a top quality Kangxi piece. This impressive pot might have served as a ginger container. The jar stands on a turned and carved rosewood base, and has a carved and nicely detailed openworked rosewood circular cover. Both wooden parts were obviously added at a later stage, and might date to the late 19th or early 20th century. The base is in perfect condition, the cover shows an old rim repair (piece neatly glued in and touched up), needing to be mentioned for accuracy, but not detracting from it's beautiful appearance. The jar is in outstanding condition, with no cracks or repairs, and only a very insignificant rim chip. It stands 9 inches (230 mm) high (excluding wooden cover and base).and is approximately 8 inches (200 mm) wide, Including the wooden parts the jar stands and impressive 12 inches (30cm) high. It's total weight is approximately 2,5 kilos. The provenance of this object is a distinguished Dutch estate that I had to clear recently. Please view the pictures, which give a good impression of the exceptional condition and the quality of this lovely object.
