EXTREMELY RARE c1890 PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT SILVER DRAGON TABLE CANDLESTICKS; MAJESTIC FOUR CLAW DRAGON WINDING AROUND LONG TAPERED COLUMN; THREE DRAGONS AMIDST STREAMING CLOUDS HAND ENGRAVED TO BOTH NOZZLE AND BASE; NEVER MONOGRAMMED This is a beautifully designed and masterfully hand crafted pair of late 19th century Chinese export silver dragon table candlesticks. This is an exceptionally rare form in China trade silver. Chan's extensive collection, illustrated in his 2005 is without a single candlestick. The few that do come to market are tourist period 1920s-1940s. Those poorly designed and crafted. From our personal collection. One of only two pairs we've collected in thirty years. The set beautifully executed. Long tapering column. Stepped shoulder, rising to raised urn form capital. A regal, four claw dragon winds his way around the column. Lavishly detailed. Bulging eyes ablaze. Mouth open wide revealing razor sharp fangs. Long tendrils flaring. The original detachable nozzle, well fit. Three dragons chasing one another amidst streaming clouds. Beautfiully hand engraved. Stepped, circular domed base, weighted. Continuation of the three dragons amidst cloud decoration. Only in larger scale along the rounded base edge. Never monogrammed. Each dragon candlestick 8 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/2 wide at base. Weighted.
