FINEST c1880 CHINESE EXPORT SILVER DRAGON CENTRE BOWL ON ORIGINAL ROSEWOOD STAND; EXCELLENT CONDITION; SIGNED This is an exceptionally fine c1880 Chinese export silver dragon centre bowl. Offered with its original hand carved rosewood stand. The bowl signed in Chinese characters. The maker is unknown to us. Trade silver prices have exploded in the past year. As evidenced by Skinners Boston auctions in Fall 2010 and this spring. There, late export period, common form, three and four inch dragon mugs routinely sold for $4-5000 USD. On April 20 at Woolley & Wallis, in the UK, a six ounce dragon mug sold for $2700. USD. This c1880 dragon bowl in classic globe design. Elegant gently scalloped raise vine scroll rim. Adorned with a large brilliantly carved four claw dragon encircling the entire surface. Massive head carved in exceptionally high relief. Mouth open wide, exposing razor tip fangs. Bulging eyes ablaze in search of the sacred pearl. Long undulating body comprised of hundreds of individually carved scales. The bowl atop its original beautifully carved rosewood stand. Never monogrammed. This dragon bowl is 4 1/2 inches and weighs 7 1/4 (standard) ounces. Hallmarked as shown. Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout.
