FINE AND RARE c1890 CHINESE EXPORT SILVER SAUCE BOAT; GEORGE III FORM; FINEST HAND HAMMERED SURFACE; OVAL CAP PAW FEET; GOLD WASH; NEVER MONOGRAMMED; SIGNED "HUNG CHOW HING" UNRECORDED, POSSIBLY UNIQUE MAKER
This is a beautifully designed masterfully hand crafted c1890 Chinese export silver sauce boat. In the coveted George III form. Signed for trade silversmith Hung Chow Hing. This maker is not recorded in Forbes, Kernan nor Chan (2006). Nor have we observed this Chinese silversmith in thirty years of collecting. From our personal collection. Now offered on Ebay. The suace boat executed in classic raised oval. Often referred to as boat form. The most prominent design of sauce boats in the Georgian period. Thick, turned upper rim. Long sweeping gently arched spout. Soft, all over hand hammered finish. The thousands of tiny punch marks capture the natural light brilliantly. Well cast C-scroll handle, moulded thumb. Supported upon handsome oval cap, bent knee hoof feet. Original gold interior. Never monogrammed. This beautifully hand crafted late 19th century Chinese export silver signed George III form sauce boat is 7 inches long and 3 inches tall. Thick, heavy guage solid silver construction, weighs 5 1/2 ounces. In excellent condition. Near pristine. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout. Retains much of its original brilliant gold wash interior. Stands perfectly flat on table. The seemingly endless subtle surface variations most evident to interior walls, illustrate the hand crafting. Well struck hallmarks to underside. Unique maker "Hung Chow Hing" and Chinese characters.
