This incredible piece was acquired from a private collector who had gotten it from a private museum in Luo Yong City, HeNan Province in China. It is referred to as THE GOLD TORTOISE STATUE DRINKERS' WAGER GAME. This item, the Wagers game, is said to have been found in a Tang Dy tomb in Ding Mao Bridge, Dan Tu, Jiang Su province in 1982. Size: 5.31 inches long and 8.66 inches high. The item on the back of the tortoise looks like a gold candle, the wager sticks are kept inside this candle and there is a cover on the top. The story behind this game refers to the famous works of Confucius, the Great Man in the Spring and Autumn Period. It is regarded as the "Root of Chinese Culture. The Tang Dynasty was a very prosperous period and people had more time for reading, writing, drinking and playing games. In playing this game, the older or most important man, drank first, then he chose one order from the Gold Candle and read it. The order says that someone should answer the questions and then drink, and then past it to the next and so on and so on. Gold and silver items from ancient times can be precarious. Sometimes you can see green or rust and other times there may be red spots and/or dark tarnishing. This is because in ancient times the gold and silver a lot of times was not pure, and many, if not most of the time, there was bronze in it. Because of the bronze component there can be rust. Because of the silver there can be tarnishing. Gold can also change its look. The overall appearance will not be shiny and new looking. The chemical reactions of the different materials used, and exposure to the elements, is largely responsible for these changes.
