Hi, I'm Hew. I have enjoyed collecting flow blue, polychrome, transferware and other chinoiserie pieces since 1970. Alas, it is now necessary for me to simplify life, downsize and make a portion of my collection available to others. I have also placed several pieces in my antique shop booth. My first preference is to sell to my fellow eBayers, so please let me know ASAP if I need to retrieve this piece for you. Cheers! This is a 'Mud Man' Chinese figurine. He is a fisherman with fish in hand over a fish basket. Sitting, he is 5 1/4" high. The term 'mud' is attributed to the crude clay that was used to make these figurines. Mud men became very popular in this country around the time of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Each mud man (and an occasional mud woman) was hand made and unique. A set of colors, including yellow, green, blue, brown and white, was used in different combinations. The face, hands and feet were left unglazed, and so are the color of the original clay. Different craftsmen and tradesmen are represented among mud men. This piece is stamped 'CHINA' on the bottom. Mud men mix well with chinoiserie pottery and cloisonne. This mud man is in very good condition, free of crazing, chips, cracks and repairs. I have collected flow blue and polychrome for many years, and this cup and saucer are great pieces.
