Chinese Song(960-1279 AD) Hare’s Fur Glaze Two Handled Large Mouth Pot An exceptionally large and highly iron oxide Hare’s Fur example. The body is made of a higher fired grainy brown stoneware and wheel thrown. The body is barrel shaped with a high shoulder, neck and rounded rim. A double set of formed and attached handles on opposing sides were used to attach ropes so the pot could be hung. The glaze is thick as expected for the period. This wonderful glaze is black with reddish brown Hare’s Fur streaks running vertically all over the piece. This glaze has a mirror like shine with a bluish cast haze as found on middle song pieces. The base does have a shallow side foot ring found on early Song pieces. Based on the thinness of the walls and the quality of the glaze it may well have been made in the same kilns as the famous Jian wares. For reference to an almost identical glaze type see page 218/219 of Robert Mowry’s 1997 Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers . Nigel Wood in his book Chinese Glazes , University of Pennsylvania Press, has an excellent discussion of these wares, see pages 139-149. The pot is in excellent condition with no cracks or hairlines. It does show evidence of centuries of use. There are minor chips all around the lip. The foot ring is heavily worn. Under 40X magnification the complete surface is covered in use wear scratches concentrating around the finish and rim. The rim has so many fine scratches that the glossy glaze has dulled. Hare’s Fur pieces this large are quite difficult to find and this is a wonderfully example at least 900 years old. Provenience: An Old Delaware Estate Dimensions: Height 7 1/8 inches (18.1 cm), Rim Diameter 5 7/16 inches (14 cm), Foot Diameter 4 7/16 inches (11.3 cm).
